The Film and the Faroes
The Film and the Faroes From September 4 - 6, 2024, I attended the 1st Islands Water Congress in the Faroe Islands. I went as a graduate student (as I am attending the University of Prince Edward Island). My video, “Water, water, everywhere” was part of a collaboration with Dr. Laurie Brinklow and Ryan Elliot Drew (both Professors at UPEI) and was shown as part of the closing ceremony at a fabulous multi-purpose venue called Nordic House. The scenery in the Faroe Islands is i

Launch of the Master's - Prince Edward Island
Salutation Cove, Prince Edward Island - September 2023 It's January, 2024. A new year and a fresh page! COVID made me rethink a LOT of things, including my scholastic endeavours. I had always wanted to do a Master's Degree but the timing wasn't right. And then, I realized over COVID, the timing WAS right. I'm now a Master's student at the University of Prince Edward Island in Island Studies. From the UPEI website: The Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) at the University

New York City and the Outsider Art Fair
After years of talking about it, a friend and I went to the Outsider Art Fair in New York City in early March. It was my first visit to the fair and my third visit to NYC. Loved the show, loved the city (again). Went back to the show for two days straight just to make sure I had absorbed all the content. Here are a few shots: My new favourite artist is Della Wells. The piece above is Souls Bloom in this Garden (2022). The environments she creates for her self portraits are ri

Lost Vegas in Las Vegas
Travelling is one of the things that keeps me sane. And so does art. Combining the two makes me very happy. In November, I went to a place I never thought I'd go to. And I saw an exhibition that exceeded my expectations. Lost Vegas, Tim Burton's exhibition at the Neon Museum in Las Vegas, was an amazing exhibition held in a crazy town! Nestled amidst the fantastic old signs in the neon 'boneyard' were Tim Burton's figures from his various movies. It was so much fun to walk ar

Recharge on Prince Edward Island
Soothing My Soul in Prince Edward Island I spent a glorious (almost) two weeks in Prince Edward Island, home to some childhood memories, and where most of relatives live. I stayed with my cousin Sue in Kelly's Cross. I was on a mission: recover from a near-meltdown triggered by the death of my cat, and do some genealogy. In late June, my Outsider Art/Art Singular group, Remix Collective, mounted an exhibition at the Thames Art Gallery. "We Come in Pieces" was a lot of work br

New York City at Easter!

Best cheesecake in the world. Our hotel. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio lived there. Briefly. Museum of Natural History. The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Largest Anglican Church in the World! Cathedral ornamentation. Inside the cathedral, an exhibition entitled "Sanctuary". Over the altar, E

Chinatown!
blingy stuff in a window in Chinatown Oh, boy! I got to go to Toronto for the last weekend of the summer! This time, my oldest boy Monty and I checked out Chinatown and Kensington Market. You never know where inspiration will come from. These bejewelled critters were in a window display and I thought they created an interesting scene. There are days I feel all bright and sparkly, filled with ideas and brimming with plans to create. And then there are days when I wonder what i

Riding The Subway
Jumping On the TTC Subways are awesome. There are so many unanswered questions on the subway. The girl on the right- what is she texting? The girl stepping onto the train- where is she going? The red-haired lady on the left- is she dreaming of a boy she kissed in grade school? You could make up an entire story for each of these women, none of which would be true, but you could have fun guessing. What was I doing? I was visiting Toronto for the weekend, dining at C5 at the ROM

A Nice Day
fresh tub o' margarine There is poetry in the smallest, unlikely things.... I have these moments where I am stopped dead in my tracks and then find myself searching for my camera. The above image is of a margarine container, newly opened. Such delectable promise! Worthy of a photo. Today is a beautiful sunny day and, although the Art Siren called me at around 11am, I ignored her. I watched an epic movie, Spartacus... and then I threw a load of laundry in the machine, cracked

Back from Victoria
I just spent a week in Victoria and I'm all rested and ready to create! I saw Emily Carr's work at the Art Gallery of Victoria and was inspired. Not sure how that relates to shadowboxes and pictures of Ken and Barbie, but I'll figure it out. I picked up a copy of Emily Carr's journals and I am finding her entries very interesting. I loved it when she wrote about trying to paint a mountain and not being able to capture its true nature, then getting frustrated after a few month

Ah, Spring!
"untitled" because I can't think of anything that isn't rude I'm posting this just because it is spring and.... um..... just because. Actually, I was looking over the shots from this session and thinking that they might be good submissions for the Desmond Juried Art Show.... is that photo REALLY focussed on rural life, you ask? Well, it features home-grown produce! Of COURSE it makes reference to rural life. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I Need Some Sun!
Miss Thang I am trying to get an entry together for the LOOK juried exhibition in Sarnia.....but all I can think about is getting some sun. We were supposed to be in Key West this week, but it is the first year of high school exams for my oldest boy and rather than leave him behind, we did the responsible thing and stayed home to help him through the ordeal. Which is turning out to be no big deal. Next year, I'll make him study by the pool in Key West. It is cold and dark and

Adventures
Adventures in Growing Up The prints that I've made in printmaking class aren't all fabulous- as a matter of fact, I seem to have more 'rejects' than 'keepers'. Grrr. But I did not despair! I've been creative with one of the rejects here. The print in the background of 'Adventures in growing up' is the mirror image of 'Believed he had a chance'. I'm in the process of using some of the other rejects in the same way- as backgrounds for a collage. I'm not sure if this will be ent

Sisters
Sisters Three months has passed since my last entry- time flies when you get a job! I have been pretty busy lately, but I was able to finish a commission I did for a lady named Gerri. In about a week, Gerri's sister Franki is going to visit her from England. They are very close. Gerri is going to surprise Franki with this shadowbox I made. It is called "Sisters". One of the cuter things in the box is the bunch of jellybeans in the teacup, bottom right. Apparently Franki could

Art & Life!
Here's what PaPaYa! (another cool website) had to say about Teesha Moore and Art & Life: Art &Life is a quarterly, inde magazine celebrating the mixed media & journal arts movement. This creative forum is compiled by Teesha Moore featuring tips for artists, full color features, and community info. Teesha Moore's publications are an underground phenomenon. Teesha Moore has been one of the forerunners of the world of altered art and visual journaling for the past 20 years. SH

Gone Global
Wow- my artwork was published in the December 2007 (#10) issue of Art and Life magazine!! I was pretty pleased with myself when Teesha Moore sent me my copy. She even sent a copy to my mom! I may have had my 15 minutes of Fame! Teesha Moore is an artist based outside of Seattle and, in addition to hosting bi-annual art workshops (which I NEED to attend someday soon), she publishes a fabulous magazine called Art and Life. I've been a subscriber for a few years, ever since I fo

Boxes for Christmas
For the past few Christmasses, I have been making gifts for my friends. At this point in our lives, my friends and I have just about everything we need. To truly give something different and meaningful, I have found that hand-made gifts are the way to go. And some of my friends have made me some cool things, too! My friend Phyllis made me some Christmas bats (wearing Santa hats!) a few years ago, and they have become my all-time favourite ornaments for the tree. Yes, Christma

Two Power Joan of Arc Hears the Angels (Vox Angelica) The Dating Circus The gentleman who bought 'Wedding Circus' asked me to make another circus-themed box. Here it is! I just completed 'Dating Circus', which I have been told is the best shadowbox I've done to date. It is going to be hung in a room at the Retro Suites (a very cool and funky hotel located here in Chatham). I feel quite honoured! I am currently working on some smaller pieces for a show called 'Through Wome
