First Solo Show

Burn, baby, burn
All eyes will be upon me this Thursday night! It's the opening for my first solo show at ARTspace- Laurie Langford: Guys & Dolls.
Am I ready? Absolutely not! I still have some bird skulls to glue to Barbie bodies- yes, the front window of ARTspace will be quite different for one month. I am excited! Lots of friends and family will be in attendance- I hope I can come up with some interesting dialogue.
I know that one of the questions will be "why?"
Why do I pose my son's action figures around the backyard and photograph them and turn them into prints? Why do I take dollar store dolls, call them Muffy, and pose them naked on the beach? Because I enjoy it, that's why. And the results make me laugh. And maybe, just maybe, there's a social commentary in there somewhere about stereotypes and the idea body. I am at a point in my life where NOT looking older involves surgical procedures, so the' ideal body' issue is on my mind. And one of the ideal bodies in our society is Barbie. Big boobs, no thighs, and impossibly smooth plastic skin. What's wrong with the way we look naturally? I know, this is coming from a woman who has been dyeing her hair for decades.
The next post will be about the show. For now, it may interest you to know that the 'eyes' in the above print are Audrey Hepburn's.
